BABYLON BERLIN

MHz has, at long last, brought the final season of this series to the United States. Based on historical events, it uniquely and compellingly weaves history into a fictional storyline. The protagonists are flawed and quirky yet immensely interesting and likable. The scenery, costumes, and music are spectacular. We are immersed in a dynamic city and its extravagant nightlife for the rich. At the same time, many people live in extreme poverty, unable to afford burials for their family members when they die. I found it difficult to believe both realities were from the same period.

I’ve had a difficult time writing about this series. I had grown fond of the main characters and wanted everything to work out for them. I was caught up in their aspirations and desire to live a better life. I wanted a happy ending, but I forgot that the true parts of this story did not have a happy ending.

I struggled with this conflict for a few weeks, thinking the ending wasn’t good, but I couldn’t say why. At first, I wanted more specifics about how things turned out for each character. As time passed, I realized that I had connected with the period in a way I hadn’t before. Knowing what terrible events would follow and inflict such hardships on these characters that I had grown fond of upset me. There are many series and films about the Nazi era, but focusing on the era before the Nazis came into power affected me in a much deeper way. It is easy to think it could never happen again. It is easier to believe we have evolved. But this is exactly the thinking that allows it to happen over and over again.

I apologize if I’ve presented this as a depressing series because, overall, it wasn’t. Every episode was worth watching, even if it didn’t bring me the happy ending I hoped for. I highly recommend watching the series precisely because it presents such uncomfortable aspects of life in a complex and fascinating manner. It is more than simply an entertaining television series.
